These programs are vital to our community as they address the unique challenges faced by immigration, foster integration, and empower individuals to thrive. By providing essential supports, we build a stronger and more inclusive community for all. Together, we can create a welcoming environment where newcomers can flourish and contribute their diverse talents and experiences. 

Settlement Support

We nurture new beginnings and help newcomers navigate the path to success. Each individual we serve has a unique story and set of needs. Through our range of services, we aim to meet those needs and guide newcomers toward a successful future.

Embarking on a new life in a different country can be a transformative and challenging experience. At ACSA, we understand the importance of providing comprehensive settlement support to newcomers. Our programs aim to equip individuals with the knowledge, resources, and guidance they need to navigate the path to success in Canada. Our experts speak over 10 languages other than English and are readily available to guide immigrants on this journey.

We provide four main settlement support programs:

  • Newcomer Orientation sessions: We understand that the initial stages of settlement can be confusing. Our orientation sessions provide newcomers with crucial information on financial literacy, immigration rules, bridging programs, and more. By equipping newcomers with this knowledge, we empower them to make informed decisions and successfully adapt to life in Canada. 

  • Citizenship Test Preparation Workshops: The path to Canadian citizenship is an important milestone for newcomers. Our workshops ensure that newcomers are well-prepared for the citizenship test, fostering a sense of belonging and participation in Canadian society. 

  • English Classes: Language barriers can hinder integration and limit opportunities for newcomers. Our English classes not only enhance language skills but also promote effective communication, enabling newcomers to engage confidently in their new community. 

  • Ukrainian Newcomer Program: We recognize the unique needs of Ukrainian newcomers. This program provides tailored settlement support, ensuring access to vital information and resources. Our Ukrainian-speaking Settlement Counselors offer culturally sensitive guidance, bridging the gap between Ukrainian newcomers and their new environment.

In 2022, we did over 7,000 sessions including one-on-one case management, workshops, employment support, language sessions, community connections, and citizenship classes.

“I am from Afghanistan. Last year my family and I came to Canada. Back home I was a journalist; I worked with a newspaper - a famous newspaper. This was before the Taliban, before the collapse of Afghanistan. When we came here, we heard about ACSA from my neighbours. We went to ACSA and participated in some programs like the food bank and other programs they had for Afghan people. We met some Afghan people and we meet new people around us. This helped us build community, which is very important as a newcomer. For example, we participated in a program for Afghan people on finding a job. That was very good for me because one of the big challenges for newcomers is finding a job”

Digital Inclusion

Access to technology and digital literacy is crucial for social, economic, and educational participation in today's digital society.

ACSA is committed to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that newcomers have the tools and skills to thrive in the digital age.

We provide 3 main programs to bridge the digital divide:

  • Online Language Training Program: Language barriers can hinder social interactions and limit opportunities. Our online language training program enables newcomers to enhance their English language skills, improving their social interactions and facilitating their integration into Canadian society.

  • Digital Access Program: Limited access to technology exacerbates existing inequalities. Through our partnership with Refurbished Computer Technology (RCT), we provide affordable, certified, refurbished computers to ensure digital access for newcomers. Bridging the digital divide is vital for newcomers to thrive in a technology-driven world.

  • Women-focused Tech Hub: Empowering women with digital literacy is crucial for their social and economic advancement. Our Women-focused Tech Hub provides a safe space for women and girls to develop digital skills, fostering creativity, innovation, and digital citizenship. By equipping them with essential digital skills, we empower women to navigate complex digital systems and make informed decisions.

Community Integration

Creating a sense of belonging and social integration is key to the well-being of newcomers.

Building a strong sense of belonging and facilitating community integration are essential for the well-being and success of newcomers. ACSA is dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive community through our programs focused on community integration.

  • Newcomer Entrepreneurship: Starting a business can be daunting, especially for newcomers. Our program provides the necessary resources, mentorship, and business coaching to support the entrepreneurial dreams of newcomers. By nurturing their talents and experiences, we foster economic growth, create employment opportunities, and promote diversity within the community.

  • Seniors' Café: Social isolation among newcomer seniors can impact their well-being and integration. Our Seniors' Café provides a welcoming space for seniors to connect, broaden their social networks, and access public institutions and employers. By facilitating social interaction and promoting good health, we create a sense of community and improve the overall well-being of newcomer seniors.

  • Youth Summer Program: Engaging newcomer youth in meaningful activities during the summer months enhances their social integration and overall well-being. Our program provides opportunities for learning, growth, and cross-cultural interactions, fostering a sense of belonging and promoting positive youth development.

“Something I learn to do for fun is ice skating. It’s popular in Ukraine and in Canada. I had a knee injury and I came and it was a challenge to learn again. I go now once per week. I try to do activities that people do here and learn the culture of Canada. I am proud of being in Canada, proud of myself and grateful to be here in Canada because of the war in Ukraine. I am proud to help myself and others through the bad mental state from the war. I am very proud of it.”
