Agency Background

ACSA is a nonprofit, multi service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities.  Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach and therapy programs, child and family programs, early years’ programs, computer access programs, and community engagement.

 

Summary of Job

The Youth Programmer is responsible for developing and implementing programming for youth within the Chester Le, Bay Mills, Glendower and surrounding communities.  Main activities include, assessing needs of youth, delivery of workshops and project evaluation around Leadership. Workshop delivery involves delivering life skills training, conflict management, recreational activities, creative and arts expression, and post-traumatic stress support. Program participants are youth ages 12-21.

 

The Programmer works closely with other ACSA youth services and staff to ensure delivery of program meets the needs of youth residing within Chester Le. 

 

Duties include:

Program Delivery

  • Responsible for planning and implementing program materials and content, and ensuring all programs are relevant to youth and compliant with ACSA’s policies and procedures
  • Engage youth during the after-school hours
  • Ability to implement a positive framework when addressing behaviours and challenges
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of each program participant
  • Responsible for daily attendance records and for reviewing site specific safety protocols
  • Ensuring budget compliance and purchasing of program supplies
  • Work collaboratively with supervisor and other ACSA staff
  • Conduct local community and peer need/asset assessments for residents living in affordable housing communities
  • Develop a communication plan to share knowledge and relevant information with key stakeholders (parents, residents, community members, community and social service representatives)
  • Develop and administer a process to monitor performance and benchmarks
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to recruit and outreach program participants
  • Complete administration tasks, including registration and data collection

 

Administration

  • Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts. Perform the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of ACSA
  • Protects own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately. Follows all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Develop and distribute project promotional materials

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of work or volunteer experience with youth (12-21 years old)
  • Experience with at-risk youth programming and facilitation
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to the experiences, issues and needs experienced by youth in Scarborough
  • Experience with program implementation using a community development/engagement model
  • Ability to form relationships with marginalized individuals while maintaining strong boundaries
  • Ability to identify problems critically, and propose effective solutions
  • Excellent crisis management and conflict resolution skills
  • Knowledge of programs and services currently available to youth, parents and the broader communities of Scarborough
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification
  • Access to a vehicle and valid license an asset
  • Valid Police Records Check.
