Social Research Assistant and Community Engagement Liaison

Position Type: Contract 16 weeks, 22 hours a week (Monday-Friday)

Pay rate: $14.00/hr

Scarborough Civic Action Network (SCAN) is a non-partisan network that aims to support building empowered communities in Scarborough through civic engagement activities that address inequities. Trusteed by ACSA, SCAN aspires to this by helping to convene, connect and enable the civic actions of people who are working to address inequities and improve the quality of life in Scarborough. SCAN strives to support a constellation of activities across Scarborough that will support this. The scope of SCAN’s work is defined by priority equity issues voiced by Scarborough residents through SCAN’s annual survey and its annual community summit which convenes community members to create an action mandate.


SCAN is seeking to hire 1 Social Research Assistant and Community Engagement Liaison to conduct a study of the civic engagement needs of community-based groups across Scarborough and to support membership recruitment.




  • Develop research plan and strategy
  • Interview 12-15 community-based groups across Scarborough
  • Submit reports for each community-based group and regularly present findings to the Stewardship Group 
  • Community engagement across Scarborough at community spaces and events
  • Inform communities about SCAN and how to become a member
  • Report regularly to SCAN Coordinator
  • Other duties as required by project goals


To be eligible, participants must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.



  • Experience working or volunteering at a community-based organization in Scarborough
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of good community engagement and social research practices
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, being community-driven, inclusion and empowerment  
  • Reliable, adaptive and good at building relationships with diverse communities
  • Ability to translate spoken and written English to Tamil, Arabic, Chinese, Bengali, Urdu, Farsi, Tagalog or Gujarati an asset
  • Basic computer literacy
