Job Title: Scarborough Civic Action Network (SCAN) Coordinator

ACSA is a nonprofit, multi-service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities to build a better tomorrow. 

Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach and therapy programs, child and family programs, early years’ programs, and community engagement.

SCAN is a community-driven network focused on mobilizing a civic voice for Scarborough, one that is inclusive of marginalized and underrepresented communities and reflective of the diversity of community members who live in Scarborough. SCAN aims to support civic engagement to address priority equity issues throughout Scarborough. SCAN is governed by its Stewardship Group made up of community-serving agencies and Scarborough residents and SCAN is trusteed by ACSA.

Summary of Job Functions:

SCAN is looking for a coordinator with a strong knowledge base of Scarborough and the various civic issues being faced by community. The candidate needs to have experience working with grassroots groups and in collaboratives that bring residents and agencies together, as well as a strong knowledge base on equity issues being faced in Scarborough.

Duties include:

  • Coordinate overall functions of SCAN, including convening of the stewardship group;
  • Develop, implement and evaluate initiatives and activities as they relate back to SCAN’s action mandate, and its priority issues of transit, affordable housing and safety;
  • Provide coordination, support and mentorship to youth to promote civic engagement for addressing community safety issues;
  • Provide coordination, support and mentorship to affordable housing resident advisory group;
  • Provide coordination and support to vaccine engagement work to ensure equity;
  • Supervise any related staff including animators, students in supporting the work of SCAN;
  • Develop any necessary partnerships with organizations to move work of civic engagement forward;
  • Develop and implement engagement plans to recruit more members into SCAN and its activities;
  • Develop and implement capacity building workshops and/or events as related to the action mandate;
  • Develop and implement communication strategies for SCAN that will ensure information flows through the network and to the various levels of membership. This includes overseeing the implementation of SCAN’s social media and website; work with stewardship group to develop sustainability plans for each platform;
  • Work with stewardship group and trustee to research and develop grant and resource opportunities to support the sustainability of SCAN;
  • Maintain records of participant registration, outreach efforts and attendance and keep up-to-date communication with participants;
  • Producing of necessary reports to the funder;
  • Participating as a team member on the delivery of other activities in the agency;
  • Performs the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts. Performs the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of ACSA;
  • Protects own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately. Follows all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.


  • 3 years relevant experience, and relevant college degree
  • Strong knowledge of Scarborough and the equity issues being faced by community
  • Strong knowledge of issues such as affordable housing and community safety
  • Strong communication skills: excellent writer, active listener and comfortable public speaker
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with diverse populations
  • Dedication to and knowledge of civic engagement, social justice and Canadian political systems
  • Experience in supporting civic engagement initiatives
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent event planning and facilitation skills
  • Experience with building partnerships
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to motivate others and build leadership development strategies
  • Ability to exercise good, independent judgment and to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness
  • Experience developing outreach strategies and materials
  • A second language is an asset
