ACSA is a non-profit, multi-service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities.  Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach programs, child and family programs, early years’ programs, and community engagement.

Summary of Job

Reporting to the Director, Finance, the HR Generalist will act as HR lead to ensure a proactive approach to human resources management.


Duties include:

Human Resources Administration

  • Act as in-house HR consultant ensuring effective HR practice
  • Provide proficient Human Resources advice and counsel to management and staff to ensure effective problem resolution
  • Research, develop and implement policies and procedures to keep the agency in compliance with relevant and current HR and employment legislation e.g. AODA, Health & Safety, Ontario Human Rights Code
    • Continually evaluate effectiveness of HR processes and create / update processes if required
    • Maintain efficient employee filing system
    • Advise and support the managers throughout the recruitment and selection process, post job openings on approved job boards and ACSA website, execute pre-screening of candidates and reference checks, participate in job interviews
    • Participate in on-boarding of new staff
  • Provide advice to managers and counsel staff during performance management /progressive discipline process.
  • Ensure Agency is in compliance with Health and Safety Act, participate in related H&S activities/projects and JHSC work, including convening and leading JHSC.
  • Act as a point of contact for WSIB cases and work closely with management ensuring timely and effective return to work process
  • Process staff members’ inquiries and issue job letters in a timely manner
  • Conduct exit interviews


Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Ensure all relevant payroll information is passed to Payroll Admin in a timely manner
  • Review and oversee biweekly payroll submission and support Payroll Admin where needed.
  • Administer group benefits: onboard and terminate members on ACSA Group Benefits Plan; communicate with external Benefits Admin ensuring all necessary information and changes to membership are submitted fully and timely; inform members about changes in the Plan and conduct information sessions for members when needed.
  • Track vacation/float/sick time accruals and usage.



  • Attend training, supervision, team and all-staff meetings, network and committee meetings as required
  • Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts. Perform the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of ACSA
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately. Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Human Resources  diploma/degree with minimum of 1 year Human Resources experience
  • CHRP designation or in progress - preferred 
  • Good communication (verbal & written) skills
  • Sensitivity to confidential information is a must
  • Strong computer skills including Excel, MS Word and Outlook
  • Detail oriented
  • Initiative, time management skills and ability to multi-task
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems and develop effective, appropriate solutions
  • Exceptionally team-oriented and dedicated to upholding excellent client service standards
  • Experience working from an anti-racist/anti-oppression framework
  • Valid Police Records Check will be a condition of employment.
