Background

ACSA is a nonprofit, multi service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities.  Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach and therapy programs, child and family programs, early years’ programs, computer access programs, and community engagement.

 

Summary of Job Functions

ACSA's Food Security department offers year-round programming to help increase access to good, healthy food. With communal gardens, cooking programs, and nutritional education, ACSA takes a holistic approach to challenging food insecurity. The Food Security Engagement Worker will work out of the Chester Le Community Corner, reporting to the Manager of Community Initiatives. The Engagement Worker will apply a community development/engagement framework to implement and evaluate initiatives that address food security within Scarborough. Ongoing programs and initiatives include: community cooking workshops, gardening workshops and three community gardens.

 

Duties include:

General Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with Our Strong Communities (Dorset Park and Steeles/L’Amoreaux), engage community stakeholders and residents to develop and maintain a community based food system
  • In collaboration with ACSA’s Food Bank Coordinator, develop supportive programming to engage Food Bank users
  • Develop and implement appropriate evaluation strategies to assess the impact of ACSA community based food security initiatives
  • Collaborate with other ACSA staff to support food programming throughout departments and communities
  • Participate in staff and team meetings at ACSA and the Chester Le Community Corner

 

Programming Responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate community cooking workshops throughout Steeles L’Amoreaux and Dorset Park, including but not limited to 12-six-week sessions of “Cooking Healthy Together” cooking workshops 
  • Connect ACSA community gardeners through leadership skills building workshops, and relevant community food field trips
  • Oversee operations of ACSA community gardens and ensure compliance to garden procedures and protocols
  • Lead and coordinate Fresh Produce Markets and Good Food Box programs
  • Consult and support children’s breakfast programs at designated sites
  • Provide relevant educational resources and materials including information about other community food based initiatives applicable towards resident interests
  • Participate in relevant working groups, committees and task forces addressing community food interests
  • Other duties as assigned

  

Administration 

  • Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts. Perform the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of ACSA
  • Protects own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately. Follows all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Establish a monitoring system to maintain quality assurance
  • Develop and distribute resources and project promotional materials
  • Develop and implement a communication plan for all food security initiatives;

 

Program Evaluation and Reports

  • Coordinate a developmental evaluation for the project
  • Write evaluation reports and annual updates
  • Maintain accurate statistics, reports and evaluations of all food security programs

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant discipline (Health, Social Sciences, etc.) or a combination of relevant education and experience
  • Knowledge of community engagement models in relation to diverse populations and communities
  • Knowledge of Scarborough community food resources, issues of relevance to newcomers, and low income families  and familiarity with diverse cultures
  • Demonstrated experience working from an anti-oppression framework
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate strong problem solving abilities
  • Excellent knowledge of urban agriculture, food security philosophies and “greening” of communities
  • Excellent report/grant writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with within a multi-disciplinary team of service providers
  • Demonstrated experience in working with vulnerable, marginalized individuals and their families/caregivers
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing and evaluating community food programming
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills  
  • Fluency in a second language (Tamil, Mandarin, and Cantonese) is a definite asset
  • Evening and occasional weekend work is required.
  • Some heavy lifting and carrying is involved in this position
  • G or G2 license an asset
