Background

ACSA is a nonprofit, multi service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities.  Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach and therapy programs, child and family programs, early years’ programs, computer access programs, and community engagement.

 

Summary of Job Functions

ACSA is looking for a skilled individual to support in the creation of a brand-new start up, a Scarborough Community Food Centre at the Dorset Park Hub. Working closely with the Operations Manager, this position will be responsible for creating and operationalizing the Food Centre which includes a shopping model.

 

Duties include:

  • Assisting with the vision of a new Community Food Centre which includes assessing current operations, with the goal of moving the model from a traditional food bank to a new Community Food Centre that demonstrates new and emerging best practices
  • Operationalize the plan including procurement of any equipment/materials and ensure the space is set up with what is needed to open its doors and launch in in Mid-January 2022
  • Work with food bank staff to operationalize the shopping model including the setting up of cards, appointment schedule and any other related systems that may be needed
  • Determine and operationalize the flow of space, including analyzing from a user experience perspective to ensure good use of space
  • Work with Food Centre staff to develop and implement a robust information and referral program and put in place the infrastructure to support the system developed
  • Work alongside volunteer staff to recruit volunteers and engage them into the development of the space
  • Work alongside volunteer staff to adapt necessary volunteer mechanisms including the implementation of an online volunteer scheduling system
  • Develop evaluation mechanisms for the Food Centre space
  • Work with staff to set up and begin the implementation of a Volunteer Committee
  • Participate as a team member on the delivery of other activities in the agency
  • Participate in agency Staff and department meetings as required
  • Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts. Perform the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of ACSA
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately. Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

  • College diploma or higher in social/human/community studies or relevant work/volunteer experience
  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in related role
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in applying innovative technology to the community service sector
  • Demonstrate knowledge and passion towards food justice and food security
  • Experience in logistics and planning use of space
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement, problem solving, and flexibility in response to changing situations and needs
  • Knowledge of safe food handling practices
  • CPR training is an asset
  • A successful clearance of a police vulnerable sector check
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately; follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Performs the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts and consistent with the policies of ACSA
