Contract full time position (35 hours per week)

with possibility of renewal

Background

ACSA is a nonprofit, multi service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities.  Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach and therapy programs, child and family programs, early years’ programs, computer access programs, and community engagement.

 

Summary of Job Functions

ACSA is looking for a skilled and innovative individual with experience and passion towards food justice to coordinate ACSA’s brand new Community Food Centre at the Dorset Park Community HUB. There is room for this portfolio to create an innovative, people centred approach to addressing food insecurity and with a vision to expand the work to include other projects.

 

Duties include:

  • Plan, implement and evaluate the Community Food Centre
  • Supervise Food Centre staff and placement students that fall under this portfolio
  • Oversee the volunteer component of the Food Centre including the provision of training, supervision and ongoing support
  • Provide leadership and direction for the new Community Food Centre
  • Establish and chair a council of community stakeholders to assist with program development and decision making
  •  Work with team to ensure the day-to-day operations smooth running of the Community food Centre space (I.e. scheduling, property management issues, etc.)
  • Work with team to implement a right’s-based model of service delivery, including the implementation of a shopping model
  • Develop and implement information and referral program appropriate for the Food Centre
  • Establish and implement mechanisms that ensure open lines of communication with all stakeholders including volunteers and clients
  • Establish new and maintain existing partnerships that support the Food Centre
  • Act as lead on behalf of ACSA with regards to Daily Bread Food Bank, including attending agency meeting
  • Ensure all statistics and reports with regards to the Food Centre are completed in a timely manner. This includes becoming an expert and a trainer on food bank administration tasks such as the Link 2 Feed and OCMS databases, intakes, data entry, and monthly collection of statistics
  • Responsible for ensuring budgets within portfolio are adhered to
  • Participate as a team member on the delivery of other activities in the agency
  • Participate in agency Staff and department meetings as required
  • Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts. Perform the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of ACSA
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately. Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

  • College diploma or higher in social/human/community studies or relevant work/volunteer experience
  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in related role
  • Demonstrate knowledge and passion towards food justice, food security and local food systems
  • Experience in outreach strategies, leading workshops and presentations
  • Understand the issues impacting clients and a rights-based model of service delivery
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Strong crisis intervention and de-escalation skills
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement, problem solving, and flexibility in response to changing situations and needs
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal
  • Knowledge of poverty and food security issues in the GTA
  • Knowledge of anti-oppression principles
  • Familiarity with or experience working in Scarborough an asset
  • Safe food handling training is an asset
  • CPR training is an asset
  • Knowledge of a second language spoken in the community preferred (i.e.: Chinese, Tamil, Arabic)
  • Access to a vehicle is an asset
