Casual Contract position

June-September 2019, Up to 10 hours a week

Contract Start date:  June 3rd, 2019

Salary: $15.00 per hour


Reports to: Manager, Community Development




ACSA is a nonprofit, multi service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities. Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach and therapy programs, child and family programs, early years’ programs, computer access programs, and community development and engagement.


ACSA is working with a collaborative of partners to work with the Milliken Neighbourhood in South Markham to develop effective strategies to address key issues facing the neighbourhood.


Summary of Job Functions

We are seeking dynamic individual(s) to fulfill Community Animator roles with the project. The Animators’ will work with the York Region South Markham Community Development team to make connections with individuals and groups in the neighbourhood. The Animators will be trained in community engagement and will work closely with staff to develop best methods in terms of connecting with community. The work will involve outreach to where people gather (i.e. programs, schools, places of worship, etc.), as well as will include the implementation of surveys, focus groups and other engagement initiatives.  The animators will be responsible for leading these initiatives, as well as will play a key role in documenting the process and learning’s along the way.


Duties include:

  • Participate in training sessions and other meetings with staff as required;
  • Develop work plans with coordinator to plan how to reach the maximum number of people in the time allowed;
  • Conduct outreach and engagement activities, including surveys, focus groups and conversations;
  • Plan for and facilitate community meetings/events/initiatives as required;
  • Provide accurate documentation that captures information gathered from meetings, discussion and outreach initiatives;
  • Participate as a team member on the delivery of other activities in the Agency and collaborative, as required;
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately; follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts and consistent with the policies of ACSA.



  • Connection to the South Markham community. Candidates will ideally be a current resident; or have  a strong connection to the community;
  • Familiarity with neighbourhood and specific population group they will be working with;
  • Ability to engage with residents from multiple access points (social networks, faith communities, community groups and organizations);
  • Experience as participant or ideally facilitator/leader of community meetings;
  • Availability during period of engagement  (minimum 10 hrs per week, flexible times of day);
  • Ability to identify and assist in planning to address barriers to participation;
  • Ability to work as facilitator, eliciting input without imposing own perspective;
  • Agreement with goals of project and of engagement process;
  • Willingness to sign confidentiality and conflict interest agreements;
  • Comfort working as part of a team;
  • Provision of references as required;
  • Police check as required;
  • Access to a vehicle is an asset;
  • Ability to speak, read and write Mandarin or Tamil is an asset.
