Settlement Assistant

Position Type: Contract 8 weeks, 30 hours a week

Agincourt Community Services Association (ACSA) is a multiservice not for profit agency located in Scarborough. We are looking for a mature, energetic and knowledgeable individual to fill the Settlement Assistant position to assist settlement counselors in providing information and referral services for newcomers.   This position will be working at our Newcomers’ Centre location at Dorset Park Community Hub. 


Job Description

  • Responsible for assisting clients in the Information/Resource Area by providing general information
  • Assist Settlement Staff in providing settlement  work for newcomers
  • Assist staff in filling out forms
  • Assist in the development of  awareness of community and social services to support and make referrals for newcomers
  • Work cooperatively with other staff to ensure a consistent and high level of client service
  • Assist in translation work from English to another language (see below for preferred language capacity and vice versa)
  • Follow high quality standard procedures for receiving and directing calls and handling walk-in clients
  • Support core services (Settlement and Integration, Orientation Sessions, Community Events) and other services based on community needs)
  • Data-entry; create and maintain databases and spreadsheets
  • Provide administrative support to events (ie. Send invitations, flyers, mass mailings if required, post in websites, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as required
  • Qualifications

  • Youth between 17-30 years old
  • Must have been enrolled in the past school year (2017-2018) in High School, University or College and planning to return to school in September 2018
  • Some experience in office/clerical work
  • Public speaking and group facilitation skills an asset; ability to relate to newcomers
  • Knowledgeable of newcomer issues and understand current trends about them
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Computer literate and comfortable using online platform (ie. webinar, skype, etc.)
  • A positive attitude with creative and dynamic leadership skills
  • Must be able to speak one of the following languages (ie. Pashto, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, French) 
  • Current police reference check is mandatory.
