Food Security Community Animator

Background

ACSA is a nonprofit, multi service agency at the heart of Agincourt addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities.  Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth programs, child and family programs and community engagement initiatives.

 

Our Food Security department provides seniors, adults, and youth with cooking, gardening, and food programming. This summer, we are looking for mature, energetic, and knowledgeable individuals who are returning to school in September 2018 to fill two (2) Food Security Animator positions at our Chester Le Community Corner location.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, supervise, and implement cooking and food gardening activities with residents and newcomers in the community.
  • Provide support as needed at ACSA’s three garden plots
  • Oversee necessary day to day gardening at the Chester Le Olive Garden
  • Engage seniors, adults, and youth in Food Security program activities
  • Perform community outreach and engagement to residents
  • Lead and assist in workshop delivery
  • Purchase supplies and resources as needed for programming
  • Complete administrative duties as directed, including creating content for social media accounts and website
  • Perform other duties as directed.

 

Qualifications

  • Must be between 17-30 years old
  • Must have been enrolled full-time in a Canadian institution for the past year (2017-2018) and planning to return to school in September 2018.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Passionate about sustainability, food issues, and reducing food insecurity
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Able to work outdoors safely in many kinds of weather
  • Available to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Gardening experience (professional, volunteer, or hobby-related) is an asset
  • Cooking skills (professional, volunteer, or hobby-related) are an asset
  • Experience working with senior, adult, or youth populations would be an asset
  • Second language an asset (preferably Arabic, Mandarin)
  • First Aid certification an asset
  • Current police reference check is mandatory.
