Scarborough Civic Action Network (SCAN)

Scarborough Civic Action Network (Scarborough CAN or SCAN) is a network of agencies, community groups, and individuals working to improve the quality of life of Scarborough’s diverse and growing population through civic action.

We raise awareness and speak out on issues that matter to Scarborough residents as citizens of Toronto, Ontario and Canada.

SCAN’s current work includes:

Political-Civic Engagement: Voter Education, Political Debates and Town Halls

  • Outreach to Scarborough communities - particularly in underserved neighbourhoods - to increase civic engagement.
  • Workshops on the jurisdictions and processes of different orders of government, what our political representatives are responsible for and how to vote.
  • Train and support youth groups, neighbourhood associations and local not-for-profit organizations in organizing their own debates. (In 2010 Municipal Elections, SCAN we helped with City Councillor debates in seven of Scarborough’s ten wards and organized a Mayoral Candidate debate, “Inner City Suburbs, Inner City Issues”).

GrOWTH: Grassroots Organizations Working Together and Helping communities

  • Launched to support grassroots projects, community groups, associations and emerging organizations throughout Scarborough.
  • Our goal is to assist grassroots organizations overcome challenges and develop into strong and sustainable groups that develop services and programs that benefit residents and affect change in Scarborough’s communities.
  • We develop and provide workshops based on their interests, connect them with experts in the field and we facilitate individual mentorship.
